Is the cottage warm and comfortable in winter?
Situated about 470 meters above sea level near the mountains, Alagni Village is about 1–2°C cooler than the coast. Winter temperatures usually range from 10–18°C (50–64°F). From January to March, it can sometimes be chilly, with storms, heavy rains, and snow on the mountains, but there are also warm, sunny days. This makes it perfect for hiking, exploring without crowds, and enjoying local life.
Thanks to the fireplace and a new, powerful air conditioning system, Tonia’s Cottage stays warm and cozy, offering a comfortable home away from home. Is the cottage comfortable during the summer heat?
Crete’s summers are hot and sunny, with temperatures around 27–30°C (81–86°F), and from July to September they can rise up to 40°C (104°F). Tonia’s Cottage, a partially stone home at 470 meters above sea level in Alagni Village, stays about 1–2°C cooler than the coast. Thick walls, mountain breezes, and a new air conditioning system keep it comfortably cool, making it a relaxing summer retreat.
When is the best time to visit Crete?
Spring (April–June): After winter rains, the island is green and lively. The sea is cooler from winter and snowmelt, but swimming is possible, and you can still admire the snow-capped mountains. Days may bring occasional light rain, and nights are still cool. The atmosphere is relaxed as locals are preparing to start the season, prices of services are generally lower. Easter time is a great time to visit the island!
Summer (July–September): This is the hottest time of the year, with temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C (104°F). Nights can also be very warm. It’s perfect for visiting museums, relaxing at the beach (sea is very warm!), or discovering hidden coves, but not ideal for long hikes or exploring open spaces during the day. At Tonia’s Cottage, it stays cooler, offering a comfortable retreat from the heat.
Autumn (September–November): The sea stays warm, and there are fewer crowds. Some rains and clouds appear, but the weather is still great for hiking and exploring. Early November may see some businesses closing as the high season ends, and locals take a well-deserved rest after the busy summer months.
Winter (December–March): Winter can be rainy and stormy, but there are also sunny days with temperatures around 10–18°C (50–64°F). The weather can be unpredictable, like a chocolate box😊—you never know what you’ll get! It’s a good idea to plan for both cold, rain and sunshine.
