Discover Cretan Wine Heritage in Lyrarakis Winery
A Legacy of Winemaking
Lyrarakis Wines was founded by brothers Manolis and Sotiris Lyrarakis, who were inspired by their deep connection to the Cretan land and its winemaking traditions. Their vision has been carried forward by the second generation of the family, who continue to innovate while preserving the rich heritage of Cretan viticulture. The winery is nestled in the picturesque village of Alagni, surrounded by the lush Psarades vineyard and the majestic Lassithi mountains, offering an enchanting setting for wine enthusiasts.
Reviving Rare Grape Varieties
One of the most commendable achievements of Lyrarakis Wines is its dedication to the revival of rare grape varieties. The winery has successfully brought back to life more than 11 indigenous varieties, including Dafni, Plyto, and Melissaki. These grapes, once on the brink of extinction, are now thriving in the Cretan soil, thanks to the careful cultivation and passionate efforts of the Lyrarakis family.
Dafni: First planted in the Psarades vineyard in 1992, this grape produces wines with a distinctive herbal aroma.
Plyto: Also planted in 1992, Plyto is known for its crisp acidity and delicate flavors.
Melissaki: Rescued in 2010 and now growing in the Gero Deti vineyard, Melissaki offers unique and complex notes that are a delight to the palate
Welcome to Tonia's Cottage in Alagni!
One of the highlights of staying here is its proximity to the renowned Lyrarakis Winery, a mere 20-minute walk or a 5-minute drive away. Established in 1966, Lyrarakis Wines has been a cornerstone of Cretan winemaking, devoted to reviving indigenous, nearly extinct grape varieties and crafting wines that showcase their unique qualities.
Commitment to Sustainability
Lyrarakis Wines is not only committed to preserving Cretan wine heritage but also to sustainable farming practices. Since 2020, the winery has transitioned to organic viticulture, with a significant number of their partnering farmers following suit. The winery employs regenerative agricultural methods, such as eliminating ploughing and using organic fertilizers produced from local waste.
Adapting to climate change, the winery has implemented innovative measures like moving to higher altitudes and adopting the lyre trellising system. Their commitment to sustainability is evaluated annually, with a focus on water, soil, pest, and ecosystem management, air quality, and community impact. These efforts are transparently shared through their Message-In-A-Bottle project.

Tonia's Favorite Wine: Kotsifali 100%
As the host of Tonia's Cottage, I am excited to share with you my favorite wine from Lyrarakis Winery - Kotsifali 100%. This wine, made from one of the queens of Cretan grape varieties, offers an elegant mouthfeel with notes of spices and red fruits, and a piquant aftertaste.
The Kotsifali grapes are cultivated at an altitude of 500 meters, adding a unique character to the wine. It pairs beautifully with Mediterranean dishes, roast meat, and spicy cheeses. I highly recommend trying it during your visit!
