Find Your Own Slice of Paradise in Crete’s Hidden Beaches
Crete is full of well-known beaches, but if you're looking to escape the crowds and find your own slice of paradise, there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path spots worth the extra effort to get to. These secluded beaches, mostly on the southern coast, offer quiet, unspoiled beauty that feels like a secret waiting to be shared.
Red Beach (or Kokkini Ammos)
Located just 800m from Matala and 68km southwest of Heraklion, Red Beach is a secluded gem known for its striking red sand and clear blue-green waters. You can reach it via a 15-25 minute hike over Kastri Hill or by a short boat ride from Matala Harbour.
The beach offers limited facilities—a small, occasionally open canteen and a few tamarisk trees for shade—so bringing your own supplies is recommended. Its northern side is nudist-friendly and carries a legacy of the 60s and 70s hippie culture. The area is protected by the Natura 2000 program and features fascinating rock carvings and nearby caves accessible by boat, making it a unique and tranquil spot to explore.

Triopetra Beach - The Best Sunset Spot in Crete
Triopetra is a beautiful beach that offers both relaxation and adventure. The beach is named after three massive rocks that rise from the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop to this otherwise peaceful spot. The beach is large, sandy, and perfect for lounging or taking a swim in the clear waters.
The real gem of Triopetra, however, is the incredible sunset. There’s a spot on the rocky cliffs where you can sit and watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. I’ve spent entire nights camping under the stars here, listening to the waves — it’s one of the most magical experiences I’ve had on the island. The beach also has a few tavernas, but if you prefer solitude, there are plenty of quiet corners among the rocks.

Agios Pavlos Sand Dunes
If you’re looking for a beach with a unique landscape, Agios Pavlos Sand Dunes is a must-see. Located south of Rethymnon, this beach is known for its expansive sand dunes that create a desert-like atmosphere. What makes it even more special is that it’s rarely crowded, giving you plenty of space to relax and enjoy the beauty around you.
The highlight is the stunning sunset view from the cliffs above the beach. You can also take a short hike to the rock formation called Apoplystra, where you’ll see colorful, wavy rock layers that are as breathtaking as the beach itself. For an extra adventure, hike up to the sand dunes — but be prepared for a bit of a climb. Once you’re at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views that are nothing short of spectacular.

Karteros Beach – A Golden Stretch of Sand
Just 7 km east of Heraklion, Karteros Beach offers a long, sandy stretch and shallow waters perfect for a relaxing swim. It's a popular spot, especially the "Florida" section, but still less crowded than some of the island's bigger beaches. It’s a great choice for those looking for easy access and a peaceful beach experience. Read more about Karteros Beach here.

Agiofarago Beach and Gorge
About 80 km south of Heraklion lies Agiofarago Beach, a secluded paradise tucked at the end of the Agiofarago Gorge, which literally means Gorge of the Saints. To get there, you can either hike through the gorge (about 30 minutes) or catch a boat from nearby villages like Matala or Agia Galini. The hike is worth every step, surrounded by towering cliffs and the peaceful sounds of nature.
Once you reach the beach, you’ll be greeted by crystal-clear waters and a stunning rock arch on the western side, perfect for a refreshing swim. This peaceful spot is ideal for camping, rock climbing, or simply relaxing far from the crowds. Just make sure to wear proper hiking shoes (not flip-flops!). And don’t forget to pack snacks from local markets; there’s nothing quite like enjoying fresh Cretan cheese and olive oil in such a tranquil setting.

Listis Beach
Listis beach is located 69 km southeast of Heraklion, between Kastri and Tsoutsouras. To reach the beach, you descend a steep slope, so sneakers are a better option than flip-flops. The beach is unspoiled, with shallow, crystal-clear waters and soft sand.
The unique feature is the large rocks both in the sea and along the shore, along with caves that were once inhabited by bandits (hence the name "Listis," meaning "bandit"). It’s a quiet spot but can get busier during peak season.

Lendas & Trafoulas Beach
Lendas Beach is a quiet spot in the village of Lendas, 74 km south of Heraklion, at the foot of the Asterousia Mountains. It has a mix of sand and pebbles, surrounded by rocky cliffs that offer shelter from the wind. The clear, calm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
From Lendas, you can head to Trafoulas Beach, a more secluded and peaceful place. Only reachable by a bumpy road or boat, Trafoulas features a blend of sandy and rocky shores, framed by striking white rocks. It's ideal for those seeking solitude, but be sure to bring your own food and drinks, as there are no services available.
The best part of Trafoulas is its calmness and lack of crowds. However, the road can be tough, especially in the heat, so it's best to visit early in the morning.

Tris Ekklisies & Voidomatis (and Plysimo Beach)
Tris Ekklisies is a peaceful village located 60 km south of Heraklion, offering calm, shallow waters that are perfect for families. The stunning views of the Asterousia Mountains meeting the sea make this spot even more special.
Not far from here, you’ll find Voidomatis Beach, a secluded spot with a dramatic sea cave called the "Ox’s Eye." This beach is tucked at the mouth of the Mesosfini Gorge, known for its steep cliffs and waterfalls, making it a paradise for experienced canyoners.
Just 100 meters east of Voidomatis is Plysimo Beach, famous for its coarse sand and the interesting story behind its name.

Agriomandara Beach
Agriomandara Beach is one of my best hidden beaches in Crete, located 90 km east of Heraklion on Crete’s northern shore. To reach it, you can take an off-road drive to the Agriomandara Gorge, followed by a short hike down.
The beach is isolated, with no crowds, stunning sunsets, and crystal-clear waters. Historically, it was a harbor for ships transporting olive oil until WWII. It’s located 24 km east of Agios Nikolaos and 3 km west of Kavousi village.

Sea Daffodil: The Protected Sand Lily
If you are visiting Crete between August and October, you may encounter the rare Sea Daffodil, a stunning flower that blooms on the island’s beaches. With its delicate white petals and subtle fragrance released at night, this flower adds a touch of magic to Crete’s coastal landscapes. Its seeds, resembling tiny pieces of charcoal, are scattered by the wind and sea.
Celebrated in Minoan art, like the Prince of the Lilies fresco, the Sea Daffodil is now endangered due to habitat loss. Protected by Greek law, it still thrives on many of Crete's hidden beaches. Admire its beauty, take a photo or two, but please do not pick the flowers—they are too precious and rare to disturb!
