Find your own slice of paradise in Crete’s hidden beaches

Crete is full of well-known beaches, but if you're looking to escape the crowds and find your own slice of paradise, there are plenty of off-the-beaten-path spots worth the extra effort to get to. These secluded beaches, mostly on the southern coast, offer quiet, unspoiled beauty that feels like a secret waiting to be shared.

Red beach (or Kokkini Ammos)

Located just 800m from Matala and 68km southwest of Heraklion, Red Beach is a secluded gem known for its striking red sand and clear blue-green waters. You can reach it via a 15-25 minute hike over Kastri Hill or by a short boat ride from Matala Harbour.

The beach offers limited facilities—a small, occasionally open canteen and a few tamarisk trees for shade—so bringing your own supplies is recommended. Its northern side is nudist-friendly and carries a legacy of the 60s and 70s hippie culture. The area is protected by the Natura 2000 program and features fascinating rock carvings and nearby caves accessible by boat, making it a unique spot to explore.

Triopetra beach - the best sunset spot in Crete

Triopetra is a beautiful beach that offers both relaxation and adventure. The beach is named after three massive rocks that rise from the sea, creating a dramatic backdrop to this otherwise peaceful spot. The beach is large, sandy, and perfect for lounging or taking a swim in the clear waters.

The real gem of Triopetra, however, is the incredible sunset. There’s a spot on the rocky cliffs where you can sit and watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. I’ve spent entire nights camping under the stars here, listening to the waves — it’s one of the most magical experiences I’ve had on the island. The beach also has a few tavernas, but if you prefer solitude, there are plenty of quiet corners among the rocks.

Agios Pavlos sand dunes

If you’re looking for a beach with a unique landscape, Agios Pavlos Sand Dunes is a must-see. Located south of Rethymnon, this beach is known for its expansive sand dunes that create a desert-like atmosphere. What makes it even more special is that it’s rarely crowded, giving you plenty of space to relax and enjoy the beauty around you.

The highlight is the stunning sunset view from the cliffs above the beach. You can also take a short hike to the rock formation called Apoplystra, where you’ll see colorful, wavy rock layers that are as breathtaking as the beach itself. For an extra adventure, hike up to the sand dunes — but be prepared for a bit of a climb. Once you’re at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views that are nothing short of spectacular.

Agiofarago beach and gorge

About 80 km south of Heraklion is Agiofarago Beach, a quiet and hidden spot at the end of the Agiofarago Gorge, which means “Gorge of the Saints.” You can reach it by hiking through the gorge for about 30 minutes or by taking a boat from nearby villages like Matala or Agia Galini. The walk is beautiful, with tall cliffs and the calming sounds of nature all around.

When you reach the beach you’ll find clear blue water and a beautiful rock arch on the west side, perfect for a swim. It’s a quiet place, great for climbing or just relaxing away from the crowds. Be sure to wear good shoes for the hike, not flip-flops, and bring some snacks from local markets. You can enjoy Cretan cheese, olive oil from the laiki, and fresh pitakia from the local baker, which makes the day even more special.

Listis beach

Listis Beach is 69 km southeast of Heraklion, between Kastri and Tsoutsouras. To get there, you go down a steep slope, so sneakers are better than flip-flops. The beach is natural and peaceful, with clear shallow water and soft sand. Big rocks in the sea and along the shore, plus caves once used by bandits (hence the name “Listis,” meaning “bandit”), make it special. It’s usually quiet but can be busier in peak season.

Lendas & Trafoulas beach

Lendas Beach is a quiet spot in the village of Lendas, 74 km south of Heraklion, at the foot of the Asterousia Mountains. It has a mix of sand and pebbles, with rocky cliffs that block the wind. The clear, calm water is great for swimming and snorkelling.

From Lendas, you can reach Trafoulas Beach, a more secluded place. It’s only accessible by a rough road or by boat. Trafoulas has sandy and rocky shores with striking white rocks and is perfect for peace and quiet. Bring your own food and drinks, as there are no facilities. The best time to visit is early in the morning, especially in hot weather, because the road can be challenging.

Tris Ekklisies & Voidomatis (and Plysimo beach)

Tris Ekklisies is a peaceful village located 60 km south of Heraklion, offering calm, shallow waters that are perfect for families. The stunning views of the Asterousia Mountains meeting the sea make this spot even more special.
Not far from here, you’ll find Voidomatis Beach, a secluded spot with a dramatic sea cave called the "Ox’s Eye." This beach is tucked at the mouth of the Mesosfini Gorge, known for its steep cliffs and waterfalls, making it a paradise for experienced canyoners.
Just 100 meters east of Voidomatis is Plysimo Beach, famous for its coarse sand and the interesting story behind its name.

Agriomandara beach

Agriomandara Beach is one of my best hidden beaches in Crete, located 90 km east of Heraklion on Crete’s northern shore. To reach it, you can take an off-road drive to the Agriomandara Gorge, followed by a short hike down.
The beach is isolated, with no crowds, stunning sunsets, and crystal-clear waters. Historically, it was a harbor for ships transporting olive oil until WWII. It’s located 24 km east of Agios Nikolaos and 3 km west of Kavousi village.

Sea daffodil: the protected Sand Lily

If you visit Crete between August and October, you might see the rare Sea Daffodil, a beautiful white flower that blooms on the island’s beaches. Its petals are delicate, and it gives off a gentle scent at night. Its tiny seeds, looking like bits of charcoal, are carried by the wind and sea.

The Sea Daffodil appears in ancient Minoan art, like the Prince of the Lilies fresco, but it’s now endangered because of habitat loss. Protected by Greek law, it still grows on many hidden beaches. Enjoy its beauty, take photos, but don’t pick it—it’s too rare and fragile.
