Crete is an island of hidden gems, breathtaking landscapes, and deep history. The best way to experience its true essence? By car. Knossos: A Glimpse into Ancient History

No trip to Crete is complete without visiting Knossos Palace, the legendary heart of the Minoan civilization. Walk through the ancient corridors, admire the vibrant frescoes, and imagine life in one of the most advanced societies of its time. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just curious about Crete’s past, Knossos is a must-see.

Archanes: A Village Steeped in Tradition

Start your journey with a 20-minute drive (18 km from Tonia's Cottage or 14 km from Heraklion) to Archanes, a beautifully preserved village nestled at the foot of Mount Giouktas. This area is a paradise of vineyards, olive groves, and stunning landscapes. Local agriculture thrives here, producing some of Crete’s finest grapes and raisins.

Much of the village has been carefully restored, with its vibrant neoclassical buildings earning recognition as a model for traditional development. Wander through the charming alleys, visit local museums showcasing Minoan and Byzantine artifacts, or step inside centuries-old churches.

Take a break in the lively central square, where inviting tavernas serve authentic Cretan dishes. If you love discovering how things are made, stop by a historic olive or wine press to learn about Crete’s long-standing traditions.

Tonia’s Favorite: Myrro Skincare shop

One of my absolute favorite spots in Crete! Myrro Skincare offers natural cosmetics and herbs, all made with local ingredients. From fragrant teas to handmade soaps and essential oils, everything here is high-quality and crafted with care. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their products—definitely worth a visit!

I look forward to welcoming you to Crete and helping you explore its hidden gems. May your journey be filled with beauty, discovery, and a little bit of magic! ❤️

Myrtia: “Kazantzakis’ Village”

Next, drive to Myrtia, a peaceful village surrounded by olive groves. This is the birthplace of Nikos Kazantzakis, one of Greece’s most celebrated writers. Visit the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum to explore his life and works, then take a stroll through the village, where even the street names pay tribute to his literary legacy.

Tonia’s Favorite: Myrtia’s street art

Myrtia’s street art and traditional architecture make it a lovely place for a walk. Keep an eye out for streets named after Kazantzakis’ books and characters—these little details make the village feel like a living tribute to his work.

Stilianou Winery: A Perfect End to Your Day

After a day of exploration, unwind at Stilianou Winery, a family-owned boutique winery near Archanes. Here, you’ll find organic, handcrafted wines made with love and tradition.

Giannis Stilianou and his family cultivate their vines without irrigation or chemicals, allowing the Cretan sun and mountain breeze to shape the intense flavors of their wines. One of their most unique creations is a sun-dried Kotsifali, made using an old technique brought from Asia Minor, where grapes are dried on wooden boards to preserve their natural sweetness.

A visit to Stilianou Winery includes a tour of the vineyards, a look inside the cellars, and—of course—a tasting session with breathtaking views of the countryside.

Tonia’s Favorite Wine: Theon Gi Red

A Kotsifali and Mandilari blend, aged in French oak barrels—smooth, rich, and deeply connected to Crete’s winemaking heritage.

After a day filled with history, nature, and delicious wine, take a leisurely drive back through the Cretan countryside. Whether you’re returning to Heraklion or the peaceful setting of Tonia’s Cottage in Alagni Village, this route offers the perfect time to reflect on your adventure.

This itinerary is a perfect snapshot of Crete—blending archaeology, culture, and local flavors into a journey that lingers long after your trip ends. Whether you’re drawn to ancient history, traditional villages, or simply a good glass of wine, this day will leave you with unforgettable memories.
