Experience the village feast with sacred rituals, music, and joyful dancing

Every year on August 6th, the village of Alagni comes alive for a special celebration, a day that beautifully blends faith, tradition, and local culture.

At the heart of the village stands the Church of Sotiras, a Byzantine church that serves as a central point for both spiritual and community activities. Its location, right next to Tonia’s Cottage, makes it the perfect vantage point for guests to immerse themselves in local life.

The joy of Greek dancing

Greek dancing here is a joyful expression of community, culture, and emotion. Locals and visitors join hands, moving together in circles and patterns, feeling a deep connection to the music, the land, and each other.

The dances are playful, energetic, and full of laughter, allowing everyone to lose themselves in the rhythm and celebrate life together.

The divine liturgy and blessing of bread

The Divine Liturgy is led by the local priest. The service is solemn and melodic, with prayers and hymns that preserve traditional forms of Greek, giving the liturgy a timeless quality.

The congregation joins in chanting, creating an atmosphere that is both intimate and uplifting.A central part of the ritual is the blessing of the bread, offered by villagers as a symbol of community, gratitude, and sharing God’s blessings.

Because here, in the laughter of dancers, the blessing of bread, and the music drifting through the village, you can feel the heart of Crete itself.

Come witness it - not as a visitor passing through, but as someone stepping into a living story, where faith, tradition, and joy meet at every corner.

Evening festival and Cretan music

As evening falls, the celebration moves outdoors. The Cultural Association of Alagni invites everyone to a lively Cretan festival in the schoolyard.

A talented and well-known Cretan band, such as Vasilis Stavrakakis and his group, often performs, bringing people together to enjoy traditional music and dance.

Front-row experience from Tonia’s Cottage

For those staying at Tonia’s Cottage, the celebration is even more special: you can see the entire event from your window, or step outside and put chairs out to sit and watch the mass, music, and dancing unfold. It’s a front-row experience of authentic Cretan life, right at your doorstep.

After the blessing, the bread is shared among everyone attending, connecting the community through faith. The priest also reads the prayer for the blessing of the grapes, honoring the harvest and the gifts of the land.
